The SDET Bursary supports students pursuing Diploma or Degree studies in any field—be it technical (e.g., Engineering, Science) or non-technical (e.g., Commerce, Humanities).

What the Bursary Covers & Additional Benefits
The bursary covers a wide range of study-related expenses, ensuring that financial barriers don’t hinder your academic journey:
- Full tuition fees
- Textbooks and essential equipment (where relevant)
- Accommodation (on-campus or off-campus)
- Laptop allowance
- Monthly stipend (for 10 months)
Beyond funding, students may receive personal development support, mentorship, and additional tutoring (discretionary). Recipients will be encouraged to complete one week of vacation or volunteer work in their community each year, cultivating essential skills and reinforcing the value of community engagement.
Eligibility Requirements
Before applying, ensure you meet these criteria:
- Household income of NOT more than R350,000 per annum
- Residing in South Deep Mine’s host communities (Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Simunye, Poortjie) or labour-sending areas (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Eastern Cape)
- NOT a dependent of any Gold Fields employee, associated companies, or SDET Trustees
- Completed Matric or currently in Matric (2024)
- Accepted or intending to study full-time towards a Diploma or Degree at a public university or TVET college in South Africa (2025)
- No other existing bursary, scholarship, or financial aid
- Minimum 75% overall in Matric final results (excluding Life Orientation) if currently in Matric
- Minimum 65% overall if currently studying and a first-time SDET bursary applicant
- Must have passed the most recent year if a returning SDET bursary recipient
